How much do Preply tutors make? Worked examples

How much do Preply tutors make? It depends on three numbers: your price, your hours and Preply's commission. This SmartCookie guide works it out for €15 to €25 lessons at 10, 20 and 30 hours a week, using the commission Preply publishes and no made-up averages.

Do you get paid for trial lessons on Preply?

No. Preply keeps 100% of every trial lesson with a new student, so each trial is an unpaid hour unless the student stays.

That's why your earnings depend so much on how many trial students keep booking. Count trial lessons as time spent finding students, not as teaching time.

How the commission changes with your hours

Preply's commission starts at 33% for new tutors and drops to 18% as you teach more hours on the platform.

What rate should you set on Preply?

Set your rate with the commission in mind: Preply itself suggests taking it into account when you choose your hourly rate.

Preply's page for tutors also says new tutors can start with a lower hourly rate to get their first students faster, and that you can change your rate anytime.

What the table doesn't show

The table counts paid lessons only. Your real pay per hour is lower once you add everything else.

  • Prep time and messages with students, which Preply doesn't pay for.
  • Empty slots: a week with fewer bookings pays less.
  • Payout fees: the method you choose may charge its own.
  • Tax and, in Spain, your cuota de autónomos if you're self-employed.

Preply plus your own students

You can use Preply to fill your week and build your own students on the side, where you keep the full price.
