Tutoring rate calculator: the price per lesson you need to charge

This tutoring rate calculator works backwards: you tell it how much you want to take home each month and it tells you what to charge per lesson. At SmartCookie we built it with the same numbers as our business plan: card fees, fixed costs, the 2026 cuota de autónomos if you work in Spain and a share set aside for tax. Price guides tell you what other teachers charge. This one tells you what you need to charge.

How do I calculate my tutoring rate?

Start from what you want to take home each month, not from what others charge. Add your fixed costs, card fees, the cuota de autónomos and tax, then divide by the lessons you really teach in a month. For example, taking home €1,500 with 20 lessons a week means charging about €31.50 per lesson.

How much to charge per lesson for your income goal

To take home €1,500 a month in Spain with 20 one-hour lessons a week, charge about €31.50 per lesson. With 15 lessons a week, you need €42.

How the tutoring rate calculator works

It tries prices from 0.50 € up to 300 €, in 0.50 € steps, and shows the first one that leaves you your take-home goal after fees, costs, cuota and tax.

  1. 1

    The lessons you really teach

Lessons a week, times teaching weeks, divided by 12, minus the share you lose to cancellations. That's your lessons a month.

  2. 2

    What comes off every month

Stripe's standard card fee on every lesson, your fixed costs (accountant, insurance, tools) and, if you tick the box, the cuota de autónomos for your income band.

  3. 3

    Tax set aside

20% of what's left goes aside for tax. It's an estimate, not your real tax bill: your accountant can tell you the right percentage for you.

  4. 4

    Your price

The first price that reaches your goal is your price. If no price up to 300 € gets there, the calculator says it's out of reach: add lessons or lower the goal.

Price per lesson vs your real hourly rate

Your price pays for more than the hour of class. Taking home €1,500 from 20 lessons a week with 30 minutes of prep each is €13.21 for every hour you work.

That's why the calculator asks for your prep and admin minutes: planning, materials, messages, invoices. They don't change the price you need, but they show what each hour of your work is really worth. If your real hourly rate looks low, the fix is usually your price, not more hours.

Is your price realistic? Compare it with the market

The calculator tells you what you need, not what students pay. The typical price among SmartCookie teachers is €30 an hour (9th of October 2026): check your result against it.

If your number is well above the market, see what moves a price up (experience, exams, a clear niche) in how much to charge for private lessons. To see your whole month, with income, costs and the students you need to cover them, use the tutoring business plan.

Self-employed in Spain: the cuota de autónomos in your price

In 2026 the cuota de autónomos goes from €205.88 to €607.35 a month, depending on your net income. Tick the box and the calculator picks your band.

Because the cuota grows with your income, raising your price can move you into the next band and eat part of the rise. That's why the calculator tries every price instead of using a single formula. If you don't pay the cuota (you live outside Spain, for example), untick the box. Confirm your own case with a gestor.

Once you have your price

Write your new price down once, where students book and pay, so you never have to quote it by message again.

Charge your new price from the next booking

Set your price and packs in SmartCookie and let students book and pay through one link. Try it for 14 days, no card needed.
