How to get paid by Bizum for private lessons in Spain

You finish a lesson with Laura and she asks: "Shall I send you a Bizum?" It's a convenient option, of course. But before you get paid by Bizum for private lessons, it's worth knowing three things: what limits it has, what changes if you're self-employed and what Hacienda (the Spanish tax agency) has been able to see since 2026.

Can you get paid by Bizum for private lessons?

Yes. The simplest way is for your students to pay you by Bizum online through Stripe: with SmartCookie you send them a payment request and they pay it from their phone. Phone-to-phone Bizum is for individuals, with a maximum of €1,000 per payment and 60 payments received a month.

Bizum, bank transfer or card: which suits your lessons best?

Bizum, bank transfer and card payment through Stripe all work for getting paid for your lessons; they differ in what they cost you, how quickly the money arrives and the proof of payment you're left with.

What limits does Bizum have?

With personal Bizum you can receive up to €1,000 per payment, €2,000 a day and 60 payments a month, and your bank can set lower limits.

  • Per payment: from €0.50 to €1,000.
  • Sending: up to €2,000 a day and €5,000 a month, with no limit on the number of payments.
  • Receiving: up to €2,000 a day and 60 payments a month.
  • Within these limits, each bank can set its own.

Worth noting: 60 payments a month run out sooner than it seems. If 15 students each pay you by Bizum for one lesson a week, in a four-week month you reach 60 payments, and the next one goes over the limit.

Limits according to Bizum's FAQ.

Can I use Bizum if I'm self-employed?

Yes. Bizum has a separate option for businesses and the self-employed that works like an online payment gateway, with no limits on what you receive.

Bizum is very clear about it: sending or requesting money from one phone number to another is a service exclusively for individuals. For the self-employed and businesses it has its own option, with no receiving or amount limits, which you activate through your bank. Read Bizum's answer.

The other route is a payment platform. Stripe lets businesses in Spain accept Bizum online: the student enters the phone number they use for Bizum and approves the payment in their bank's app. Each Bizum payment on Stripe can be from €0.50 to €5,000, so a pack of over €1,000 fits too.

Does Hacienda see your Bizum payments?

Since 1 January 2026, banks and payment institutions report to Hacienda every month what businesses and professionals receive by card and by mobile-linked payments, such as Bizum.

The rule is Real Decreto 253/2025, which rewrote article 38 bis of the general regulation on tax management and inspection. The monthly report (modelo 170) includes who the professional is, the month's amount split between card and mobile payments, and the account the money goes into.

What about Bizum between individuals? The Agencia Tributaria answers this in its modelo 170 FAQ: they aren't reported, only payments received by businesses and professionals established in Spain, and there is no minimum amount.

How do I get paid by Bizum with SmartCookie?

In SmartCookie you send a payment request and your student pays it by card or Bizum through Stripe; SmartCookie keeps 0.6% and Stripe charges its own fee.

  1. 1

    Connect Stripe

Connect your Stripe account from SmartCookie. Bizum appears when your Stripe account is in Spain and Stripe has verified your DNI or NIE.

  2. 2

    Send a payment request

Turn the lessons you've taught, or a pack, into a payment request and send your student the link.

  3. 3

    Your student pays by Bizum

They open the link, choose Bizum, enter their mobile number and approve the payment in their bank's app. No account needed.

  4. 4

    It's marked as paid automatically

The payment request is marked as paid and the money arrives in your Stripe account, which transfers it to your bank.

What it costs: Stripe charges 1.5% + €0.25 for each completed Bizum payment, the same as a standard European card, and SmartCookie keeps 0.6% of each online payment. Stripe has no monthly fee.

Paid by Bizum straight to your phone? Mark it as paid

If a student sends you a Bizum directly to your phone, mark the payment request as paid by hand in SmartCookie: it costs nothing and their record stays up to date.

Want your number to appear on every request? Add it under "Other payment methods" in your billing details, for example with your Bizum number, and it will appear on the payment request your student receives.

Send a payment request and your student pays by card or Bizum without having to create an account.
